Robert E. Lyon, Attorney at Law

 

Robert E. Lyon has confined his practice exclusively to the field of intellectual property; covering all aspects, including patent, trademark, trade secret and copyright matters. Bob practically cut his milk teeth on IP law growing up in a family of patent lawyers. His grandfather Fredrick Lyon started a firm in 1901 in Los Angeles, which was to become Lyon & Lyon. Bob’s father Lewis Lyon joined his brother Leonard in the 1920’s and their other three brothers Dick, Bill and Chuck all became partners. Ultimately 5 more members of the Lyon family became members and the firm enjoyed nationwide fame as the pre-ultimate patent law firm for over a century. Bob joined the firm in 1958 as a technical advisor while in engineering school and continued as a law clerk while in law school, formally joining the firm in 1963, where he continued to practice in all fields of IP law until the firm closed in 2002. Bob continued his IP practice at the firm of Holland & Knight until 2006, where he also had the opportunity to become involved in their Native American Law practice.

 

Bob has prosecuted numerous patent applications in the electronic and mechanical fields and has had experience in the fields of optics, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, inorganic chemistry and consumer electronics including audio speaker design, and more recently internet business systems. Mr. Lyon has considerable litigation experience in trademark disputes, patent infringement and copyright infringement, including experience in the protection and litigation of computer software matters. He has also counseled numerous musicians and small businesses in copyright disputes; and has helped many companies as well as individual artists protect and license copyrighted works. More recently, Mr. Lyon has represented CardioData, Intermedics and other similar entities involving complex bio-electronic cardiac care technology. In recent years, Lyon has counseled a number of Indian tribes regarding a variety of Intellectual Property issues, including the protection and preservation of cultural lore, artifacts and rites; and various aspects of the gaming industry; has written and spoken on the interesting interface between Tribal Law and conventional US and common law concepts of Intellectual Property rights.

 

Mr. Lyon has lectured on International Trademark Law & Practice before the Intellectual Property Section of the California State Bar Association. He is Admitted to practice before the Federal District Court, in the Central, Eastern and Northern Districts of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; and has been admitted for litigation purposes in the District Courts of Hawaii, Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, Eastern District of Michigan, Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, Southern District of Texas, Western District of Washington, Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the District Court of Utah.

 

Mr. Lyon received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1960 from the University of Southern California, after having attended Stanford University for two years majoring in Chemistry. He received his Juris Doctor Law Degree in June, 1963, from the University of Southern California.   Mr. Lyon has worked both full and part-time as  an electronics technician at Stanford Research Institute’s Advanced Antenna Design Lab; Brubaker Electronics; and Douglas Aircraft. Mr. Lyon reads Spanish and German and is reasonably fluent in conversational Spanish.
